June Parenting Tip: Risky Play
Keeping children safe during play is a top priority for parents and caregivers, but we sometimes find ourselves saying “no” before giving children a chance to try something on their own. Allowing children to engage in risky play is actually very beneficial for their development
What is Risky Play?
Risky Play is any form of play that is thrilling with some risk of injury. Through this form of play children get the opportunity to assess the risk themselves and their own abilities. While risky play promotes the concept of children assessing risks themselves, adult supervision should always be present to ensure children are engaging in risky play, not hazardous play.
How Can I Support My Child’s Risky Play?
- Trust children’s own risk assessment
- Do a risk-benefit analysis before saying no
- Use the 17-second rule when watching play
- It’s okay to start small when allowing risky play
- Ask “do you feel safe?” or “what is your plan?”
